Aftercare

Berkeley Hair Clinic Aftercare

The procedure may take one day. Our care continues throughout the journey.

Exceptional hair restoration is not defined solely by what happens in the surgical theatre.

The first few days protect your newly transplanted grafts. The following weeks support healing. The months that follow require patience, reassurance and experienced clinical guidance as your new hair begins to grow and mature.

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, our responsibility does not end when you leave the clinic. Every surgical treatment plan includes personalised aftercare from our experienced clinical team, with one-to-one support and direct access to our surgeons whenever clinically required.

From the first evening after surgery through to your final result, and for many years beyond, we remain part of your hair restoration journey and are as excited as you to see amazing results coming through.

Part of your treatment

Aftercare is part of your treatment — not an optional extra

Patients naturally compare clinics by looking at the surgeon, technique, expected result and price. An equally important question is: what happens after surgery?

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, aftercare is not treated as a short-term administrative service or added to your treatment as an additional cost. It is an integral part of every one of our surgical hair restorations.

You will have an experienced, dedicated point of contact throughout your recovery, supported by our wider clinical team and six specialist hair transplant surgeons. Routine questions can be answered promptly, while photographs, symptoms or concerns requiring clinical judgement can be escalated directly to a doctor.

Support can be provided by secure message, telephone, video consultation or in-person review, depending on what is most appropriate for you.

Every Berkeley surgical treatment plan includes:

  • A personalised post-operative care plan
  • A complete aftercare pack to take home
  • One-to-one contact with our aftercare team
  • Support by message, telephone and video
  • Direct access to doctors when clinically required
  • In-person clinical review when appropriate
  • Scheduled progress reviews throughout your growth journey
  • Long-term support beyond your final result

There is no separate aftercare subscription and no additional charge for the routine support included within your treatment plan.

Continuity of care when it matters most

For patients comparing clinics in the UK, and even those considering treatment abroad, one of the most important considerations is what happens after the journey home.

Who will assess a concern? Who will review your photographs? Who can speak with you directly if something does not feel right? And who can examine you in person if a remote review is not enough? Is the team both knowledgeable and experienced?

With Berkeley Hair Clinic, your care remains within the same team that planned and delivered your procedure. Our team has access to your treatment information and can arrange an appropriate clinical or surgical review when required.

You are never expected to interpret any part of the healing process alone.

An experienced clinical team behind every result

Hair transplant recovery follows a broadly predictable pattern, but every patient heals differently.

Our experienced aftercare team works closely with our six hair transplant surgeons to guide you through each stage. We help you understand what is expected, identify when something may need closer review and provide clear advice based on your procedure and individual circumstances.

Some questions can be resolved quickly through a photograph or conversation. Others may require a video appointment, medical review or an examination in person. Our role is to make sure your concern reaches the right member of the team without unnecessary delay.

This continuity allows us to support healing, address concerns early and help protect the best possible outcome from your procedure.

Around your life

Aftercare personalised around your life

No two patients have the same work, lifestyle or recovery requirements. We regularly care for elite athletes whose training, competition schedules, travel and use of protective headwear require carefully planned recovery — tailoring guidance around exercise intensity, sweating, contact risk, helmets, travel and returning to competition.

The same individual consideration is given to every Berkeley patient. Whether you are returning to an office, working in a physically demanding environment, travelling, attending an important event or simply hoping to keep your procedure discreet, we will help you plan your recovery safely and realistically. Your aftercare plan is designed around your procedure, your healing and your life — not a generic timetable.

Your recovery

Your Hair Transplant Recovery Journey

The following timeline provides a general overview of what many patients can expect. Your clinical team may adjust this guidance according to your procedure, medical history, healing and the area treated — your individual written instructions should always take priority.

  1. Before you go home

    Before you leave the clinic

Before going home, your team will check the treated areas and explain your aftercare instructions clearly. You will receive everything required for the initial healing period, which may include:

    • Sterile saline spray
    • A pH-neutral shampoo
    • Suitable pain relief to use as directed
    • Anti-inflammatory medication where clinically appropriate
    • Written washing, sleeping and activity guidance
    • Contact details for the aftercare team

We will explain how to use each item and when to contact us.

  2. The first evening

The first evening and following day

Once home, your priority is to rest and protect the newly transplanted area. You will normally be asked to spray the recipient area with saline approximately once every hour while awake, continuing until you go to sleep and again the following day, according to your personalised instructions. Avoid touching, rubbing or placing pressure on the transplanted area. Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated — a travel pillow or carefully positioned rolled towels can help keep your head supported and reduce the chance of accidental contact with the grafts during sleep.

  3. Days 1–3

    Rest and early healing

Some tightness, tenderness or swelling can occur during the first few days. This is often the best time to keep your diary light, rest at home and catch up with Netflix. Continue following your saline, washing and medication instructions, and avoid strenuous activity, unnecessary bending, rubbing the scalp or anything that could make contact with the treated area. Our aftercare team remains available if you would like reassurance or are unsure whether something is healing as expected.

  4. Around day 5

    Becoming more discreet

By approximately day five, many patients feel more comfortable leaving home. Where healing is progressing normally and the clinical team has confirmed it is appropriate, a clean, loose-fitting hat may be worn to make the procedure less noticeable. The hat must not rub against or place pressure on the transplanted area. We can advise you on suitable styles and how to put the hat on and remove it safely.

  5. Days 7–10

    Removing the scabs

During this stage, you will usually begin a more thorough washing routine and gentle massage to help soften and remove the remaining scabs. The technique and timing will be explained by your clinical team. Scabs should not be picked, scratched or forcibly removed before they are ready. As the scabbing clears and any redness begins to settle, most patients start to look and feel considerably more like themselves.

  6. Around two weeks

    Returning to normal routines

By approximately two weeks, the initial healing period is usually well advanced. Many patients can return to normal exercise and progressively resume full-intensity gym training, provided healing has been uncomplicated and the clinical team has confirmed that it is safe to do so. Contact sports, activities involving a risk of impact to the scalp and environments with heavy dust or contamination may require additional precautions or a longer recovery period. Your team will advise you according to your sport, work and individual procedure.

  7. Around four weeks

    Established healing

By approximately four weeks, the transplanted grafts are well established within the scalp and most patients can return to a wider range of activities. Once the skin has healed fully and your clinical team has cleared you, this may include swimming and wearing close-fitting protective headwear such as cycling, racing or ski helmets. Patients who train or compete professionally will receive individual guidance according to the demands of their sport.

  8. Weeks 2–12

    The shedding phase

It is common for many of the transplanted hairs to shed during the weeks following surgery. This does not usually mean that the follicles have been lost — the follicles remain beneath the skin while the transplanted hairs enter a new growth cycle. For a period, the treated area may appear similar to how it looked before surgery, or occasionally slightly thinner. This stage can feel frustrating, but it is a normal part of the process for many patients. Our team will continue to review your progress and explain what to expect.

  9. Months 4–6

    Early growth

New hairs commonly begin to emerge from around the fourth month. Early growth can initially appear fine, light or uneven. Different follicles may begin growing at different times, so the result should not be judged too early. As the growth cycle progresses, the new hairs usually become longer, stronger and more visible.

  10. Months 6–14+

    Density and maturation

The most visible transformation commonly develops between approximately six and fourteen months. During this period, the transplanted hairs continue to gain length, calibre and coverage. The hairline and frontal scalp may mature sooner, while areas such as the crown can take longer and may continue developing for up to eighteen months. Your clinical team will review the result at the appropriate stages and assess progress in the context of your original treatment plan.

When should I contact the clinic?

We would always prefer you to contact us than remain worried at home. Speak to the aftercare team promptly if you experience severe or worsening pain, persistent bleeding, spreading redness, unusual discharge, fever, sudden or marked swelling, or any other unexpected symptom.

Do not wait for a scheduled follow-up if something concerns you. Our team can review photographs, arrange a telephone or video consultation, involve a doctor or organise an in-person assessment where required.

Long term

Care that continues beyond the final result

Hair restoration is a long-term journey rather than a single transaction. Even after your transplanted hair has matured, your existing hair can continue to change — you may want advice about maintaining your non-transplanted hair, reviewing the progression of hair loss or planning for the future.

Many Berkeley patients remain in contact with us for years, and sometimes decades, after their original procedure. Whether you need reassurance during recovery, a review of your final result or guidance much later in life, our team remains available. We do not simply want to perform your procedure — we want to understand your goals, follow your progress and remain a trusted part of your hair journey.

FAQ

Aftercare — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Berkeley Hair Clinic’s routine aftercare, progress reviews and access to the clinical team are included within your surgical treatment plan. There is no separate fee for the standard aftercare support described on this page.

Will I be able to speak to a doctor?

You will have direct contact with our experienced aftercare team throughout your recovery. When a question or concern requires medical judgement, it can be escalated directly to one of our hair transplant surgeons.

Can I be reviewed in person?

Yes. Where an in-person examination is clinically appropriate, our team can arrange a review at any one of our clinics.

How can I contact the aftercare team?

Depending on your needs, support can be provided through messaging, telephone, video consultation or an in-person appointment. You will receive the relevant contact information before leaving the clinic.

Is aftercare different for athletes?

The fundamental principles remain the same, but timing may need to be adapted around training intensity, contact risk, sweating, helmets, travel and competition schedules. We provide individual guidance for elite athletes and recreational sportspeople alike.

How long does Berkeley aftercare continue?

Scheduled reviews take place throughout the healing and growth process, but our relationship does not end at the final routine appointment. Patients are welcome to contact us for long-term advice and review as their hair changes over time.
