An FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant restores thinning hair using your own permanent hair follicles. A narrow strip of scalp is carefully removed from the donor area, usually at the back of the head, before being divided into individual grafts and precisely placed to recreate a natural hairline, improve density and blend with your existing hair. FUT allows a larger number of grafts to be harvested efficiently, with the donor area carefully closed to leave a fine linear scar.
At Berkeley, successful FUT begins with careful planning. Your surgeon assesses your hair characteristics, donor capacity, scalp laxity and long-term goals to create a treatment plan designed to look natural now and continue to make sense as your hair changes over time.
Good preparation helps make your procedure and recovery as smooth as possible. Before treatment, your clinical team will guide you on medications, hair and scalp care, and what to avoid in the days leading up to your FUT hair transplant, so you arrive fully prepared and know what to expect.
During your complimentary consultation, your Berkeley surgeon will assess your hair loss pattern, hair characteristics and donor area, then explain exactly how to prepare for your procedure. You'll receive personalised guidance on medications, hair and scalp care and what to avoid beforehand, so you know exactly what to expect on the day.
An FUT hair transplant is a carefully planned procedure, usually completed in one day. Each stage is designed to protect graft quality, preserve the donor area and create natural-looking density with a carefully concealed linear scar.
We prepare your scalp, assess hair direction and angle, and administer local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout your procedure.
Before treatment begins, your scalp is cleaned and prepared and the donor and recipient areas are assessed for hair direction, density and overall treatment design. Local anaesthetic is then administered to keep you comfortable, with your surgical team checking in with you throughout.
A narrow strip of donor tissue is carefully removed and the area closed. Follicular units are then separated under magnification and prepared for implantation.
A narrow strip of tissue is carefully removed from the donor area at the back of the scalp before the incision is precisely closed. The tissue is then examined under magnification and separated into individual follicular unit grafts, ready for implantation.
Recipient sites are created with precision using Berkeley Diamond Sapphire Blades™, before each graft is placed to follow your natural hair direction, density and growth pattern.
Your surgeon creates each recipient site according to the planned hairline, natural direction and desired density. The prepared grafts are then carefully placed one by one to create a result designed to blend naturally with your existing hair.

FUT treatment at Berkeley Hair Clinic starts from £3,499 . The final cost of your procedure depends on the extent of your hair loss, the number of grafts required, the quality of your donor area, scalp laxity and the complexity of the result you want to achieve. Your surgeon will also consider how the procedure fits into your longer-term hair restoration plan.
At Berkeley, your quotation reflects the complete treatment experience. This begins with surgeon-led planning and detailed donor assessment, followed by the careful harvesting and preparation of follicular units. Recipient sites are created in line with your natural hair direction, angle and density, using our Berkeley Diamond Sapphire Blades™ to support precise hairline design and graft placement.
Just as importantly, our care continues after you leave the clinic. Good aftercare supports healing, protects the transplanted grafts and helps you understand what to expect throughout recovery. From washing and sleeping guidance to advice around exercise, the donor scar and early growth, our team is there to support you every step of the way.
Rather than offering fixed graft packages or a one-size-fits-all price, we build your treatment around what is clinically appropriate for you. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss graft requirements, scarring, recovery and long-term considerations before recommending the most suitable approach.
Once your treatment plan has been agreed, you will receive a clear, personalised quotation so you understand what has been recommended, what your treatment includes and what it will cost before making a decision.

FUT is an established surgical hair restoration technique, but there are potential risks to consider. Because donor tissue is removed and the area is closed with sutures, healing and scarring differ from FUE. Your surgeon will explain what this means for you before treatment.
Overharvesting – removing too many grafts from the donor area can create visible thinning or patchiness
Poor technique outside the Safe Donor Area (SDA) – can cause permanent damage and unnatural results
Unlicensed clinics (black market procedures) – increase the risk of scarring, poor growth, and uncorrectable damage
Minor scalp cysts or small bumps at extraction sites
Mild infections that can be managed with proper care
Temporary hair shedding (telogen effluvium) of existing native hairs, which typically regrow over several months
Redness, swelling, or mild discomfort around the treated areas
At Berkeley, every FUT procedure begins with a detailed assessment of your donor area, scalp laxity and treatment goals. Your surgeon will discuss the expected scar, recovery process and any factors specific to you, with ongoing support available throughout your healing.
After FUT, recovery involves caring for both the newly transplanted grafts and the donor area as it heals. Our clinical team will guide you through washing, sleeping, activity, medication and caring for the donor incision, so each stage of your recovery feels clear and well supported.
During your consultation, your Berkeley surgeon will explain what recovery looks like following FUT, including how to care for the donor incision and transplanted area. You’ll receive personalised guidance on washing, medication, activity and returning to your normal routine, so you know what to expect at each stage of healing.
FUT may be suitable if you have a strong donor area, good scalp laxity and require a larger number of grafts. Your surgeon will assess your hair loss, donor characteristics and long-term goals during consultation.
FUT can be particularly useful when a higher graft yield is required or when preserving the wider donor area is an important part of your long-term treatment plan.
FUT is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should remain comfortable during the procedure. Some tightness or tenderness around the donor area can occur as it heals.
FUT leaves a fine linear scar where the donor strip is removed. It is carefully positioned and closed so that, once healed, it can usually be concealed by the surrounding hair.
Initial healing generally takes around 10–14 days, although the donor area continues to settle over the following weeks. Your surgical team will provide detailed aftercare guidance throughout recovery.
New growth develops gradually following treatment and usually becomes more noticeable over the following months. Your result will continue to mature, with the final outcome typically assessed at around 12 months.
Most FUT procedures are completed within one day. The exact duration depends on the number of grafts being transplanted, the size of the treatment area and the complexity of your individual procedure.
FUT uses follicles taken from the permanent donor area, where hair is naturally more resistant to pattern hair loss. Once successfully transplanted, these follicles are expected to continue growing long term, although your existing hair can still thin with age.
Many patients return to work within around one to two weeks, depending on their recovery and the nature of their job. Your surgeon will advise you on exercise, washing and other activities as the donor area heals.
From consultation and hairline planning to surgery, recovery and aftercare, your treatment is supported by an experienced surgical and patient care team focused on natural-looking results and a smooth, well-supported experience.
