FUT Hair Transplant

FUT is a traditional hair restoration method where a strip of scalp is removed from the donor area to harvest hair follicles, which are then implanted into thinning regions.

FUT

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, we understand that every client’s hair restoration journey is unique. For those wanting to maximise the graft yield or not wanting to shave their donor region, our FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedure offers a great solution.

What is a FUT transplant?

FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, is when a narrow strip of skin containing hair follicles is carefully removed from the back of the scalp. This donor strip is then carefully dissected under a microscope to extract individual follicular units, which are implanted into areas of thinning or baldness to restore density. This technique is ideal for patients who need a larger number of grafts in one session and prefer to prioritise density over the ability to wear their hair very short.

Why FUT?

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, we’re dedicated to providing proven solutions for even the most advanced cases of hair loss. That’s why we offer Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) – a long-standing and reliable method of hair restoration. Often referred to as the “strip harvesting method,” FUT remains one of the most effective treatments for conditions such as male pattern baldness and androgenetic alopecia.

Unlike other approaches, FUT involves removing a thin strip of hair from the back of the scalp, which is then carefully separated into smaller follicular units under a microscope. These units are meticulously implanted into thinning or balding areas to create natural-looking results.

Frequently Asked Questions about FUT Transplants

What is the FUT technique?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) involves surgically removing a narrow strip of scalp tissue from the back of the head. This strip is then carefully dissected under microscopes into individual follicular units. These units are then implanted into the areas of concern.

FUT is particularly suitable for patients who require a significant number of grafts in a single session. Patients who typically wear their hair longer also prefer FUT, as the linear scar left from the donor area can be easily concealed beneath their hair. Additionally, FUT is often preferred among female patients, as it does not require hair trimming or shaving, allowing them to maintain their existing hairstyle.

Yes, the FUT procedure leaves a linear scar on the donor region, this is usually covered by the surrounding hair follicles. Moreover, the technique of closure can have an impact on the appearance of the scar. The surgeons at Berkeley Hair Clinic use advanced closure techniques to ensure the scar is thin and easily hidden under existing hair.

While FUT doesn’t necessarily provide greater hair density compared to other methods, its primary advantage lies in its ability to maximise the graft yield from the donor area. By carefully dissecting follicular units from a harvested scalp strip, FUT procedures typically produce a higher number of grafts in a single session, making it particularly effective for patients requiring a large procedure.

Recovery following an FUT procedure typically takes around 14 days, during which patients may experience mild discomfort or tightness. Sutures used in the donor area usually dissolve naturally within a few weeks; however, if any discomfort or irritation persists, these sutures can easily be removed during your follow-up appointment to ensure comfort.

The FUT procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia to ensure patients experience minimal pain during treatment. It is normal to experience post-operative tightness or mild discomfort compared to other methods due to the linear incision made in the donor area. However, Berkeley Hair Clinic’s experienced team will provide pain management strategies to ensure comfort is prioritised.

The FUT procedure starts with the surgeon injecting local anaesthetic to the scalp to ensure your comfort throughout. A small strip of skin is removed from the donor site (usually back and sides of your scalp which is resistant to further hair loss). The donor area is then sutured precisely by our surgeon to minimise the linear scarring. Once extracted, our surgical team will meticulously separate the strip into individual grafts using state of the art microscopes. The grafts are then precisely placed into the incisions on the recipient region with careful attention to angulation, density and design.
