What is a FUE Hair Transplant?

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, we specialise in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplants, a precise and minimally invasive method for restoring thinning or lost hair. Unlike FUT (Follicular Unit Transfer), which uses a strip of scalp, FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles from the donor area, typically the back and sides of the head and carefully implanting them where hair is thinning.

Our skilled surgeons use advanced surgical instruments to ensure accuracy and minimal scarring. Procedures usually take around 8 hours, depending on the extent of hair loss. Thanks to its minimally invasive nature, recovery is quick, allowing you to return to daily life within a few days. Hair growth begins to appear after a few months, with full, natural results visible between 6 and 12 months.

FUE Hair Transplant Process

FUE hair transplants are advanced procedures performed by experienced specialists. Typically lasting a full day, the process is carefully designed to deliver natural, lasting results. Here’s what to expect during your procedure:

Preparing the Scalp
The first step is to prepare your scalp for surgery. Your surgeon will shave the donor and recipient areas to clearly see the direction and angle of your hair, ensuring a natural-looking result. While you could shave at home, it’s best to leave this to your surgeon to avoid complications during extraction.
Administering Local Anaesthetic
Once your scalp is prepared, local anaesthetic is applied to the donor area via injections. You may feel a brief sting, but this ensures the extraction process is virtually painless.

Extracting the Hair Follicles
Hair follicles are removed individually using a specialised Micro Punch, which ranges from 0.7mm to 1.25mm in diameter. This delicate process extracts follicles with minimal scarring, leaving tiny, dot-like marks that are virtually invisible once healed. Extracted follicles are stored in a solution to maintain optimal hydration, temperature, and viability.
Preparing the Grafts
The harvested follicles are sorted by size, thickness, and the number of hairs per follicle. Multi-hair follicles are prioritised, as they create a fuller, thicker appearance once transplanted.

Making the Recipient Site Incisions
Local anaesthetic is applied to the areas receiving the transplant. The surgeon then makes precise micro-incisions in the scalp, carefully planning the placement and direction of each follicle to ensure a natural hairline and growth pattern.
Implanting the Hair Follicles
Each hair follicle is manually implanted into the recipient site, typically positioned 1mm below the surface of the scalp’s intradermal layer. Precision at this stage is critical for natural density and hair growth direction.

What are the Benefits of a FUE Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a modern hair transplant method that uses tiny micro-punches to extract individual hair follicles and transplant them into thinning or balding areas.
Unlike older techniques, FUE is minimally invasive, leaves no linear scar, and offers a faster, more comfortable recovery — making it one of the most popular choices for natural-looking hair restoration.

No linear scar, more natural appearance
Faster recovery compared to FUT
Freedom to wear shorter hairstyles without visible scarring
Less postoperative pain
Ability to harvest hair from scalp, beard, or chest
Minimally invasive with precise micro-punch technology

Our goal is to deliver natural, long-lasting results tailored to your individual needs.

What are the Risks of a FUE Hair Transplant?

Like any surgical procedure, Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) comes with potential risks and side effects. Your surgeon will discuss the risks and side effects further with you during your consultation.

Choosing a qualified, ethical, and experienced surgeon greatly reduces these concerns, but it’s important to be aware of what can happen.

Risks

Overharvesting – removing too many grafts from the donor area can create visible thinning or patchiness
Poor technique outside the Safe Donor Area (SDA) – can cause permanent damage and unnatural results
Unlicensed clinics (black market procedures) – increase the risk of scarring, poor growth, and uncorrectable damage

Side effects

Minor scalp cysts or small bumps at extraction sites
Mild infections that can be managed with proper care
Temporary hair shedding (telogen effluvium) of existing native hairs, which typically regrow over several months
Redness, swelling, or mild discomfort around the treated areas

At reputable clinics such as Berkeley Hair Clinic, patient safety and ethical surgical standards are always the top priority. With a skilled surgeon and proper aftercare, most side effects are temporary, and the overall risks of FUE remain very low.

Unshaven FUE (UFUE) Hair Transplant

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, we offer Unshaven FUE (UFUE) hair transplants – a discreet option for patients who prefer not to shave or cut their hair before treatment. This advanced technique allows you to maintain your existing hairstyle, making it easier to conceal treated areas during recovery.

Our experienced surgeons perform unshaven and minimally shaven procedures with precision, helping patients return to work and social activities in as little as 5–10 days.

FUE Aftercare and Recovery

After your FUE procedure, you’ll be given a personalised aftercare plan to support healing, reduce discomfort, and protect against infection. In addition to short-term recovery support, ongoing prescription treatments are available to maintain your results and help prevent future hair loss.

Your tailored aftercare may include:

Antibiotics – to prevent post-operative infection
Antihistamines – to ease scalp irritation if needed
Pain relief – to manage any short-term discomfort
Steroid medication – to reduce swelling and inflammation
Minoxidil – to encourage long-term hair regrowth
Finasteride – to help slow down future thinning
Follow-up consultations – to track healing and results

Thanks to advances in FUE techniques, recovery is typically smooth and well-tolerated. Most patients report little to no discomfort within 24 hours after surgery, and depending on your routine, you can usually return to normal activities within 7–10 days.
